British

An important part of any Scottish Fold breeding program are the cats you breed with your folded ears.  These cats are every bit as necessary as those lovely folded cats you see in the show ring.  As a breeder you have 3 choices for breeding - Straight Eared Folds, American Shorthairs or British Shorthairs.  While I use predominantly Straight Eared Folds, I have also started using British Shorthairs, something I can show as well as use for breeding.  As such, I am ending up with a SMALL British program.

I decided to go with the British Shorthair verses the American Shorthair as I feel that the British are closer to the look that I want to see in MY Folds.  They have a rounder look, a more padded body and a coat that I feel is closer to the Folds wonderful plush coat.  I also like their personalities better as I find them to be more laid back then the Americans I've had the pleasure of knowing.  British are sometimes called British Blues, but actually come in a variety of other colors - including solids, tabbies, bi-colors (with white) and even shadeds and pointeds.

British Shorthairs also come in a longhair variety, which although not recognized by  CFA  have been  around forever and are becoming more common.  As such TICA is now accepting them on a limited basis.  I find the longhairs to be stunning cats, in fact my first Brit Queen - Rumetum Miss Muffet of Owhl (a.k.a Happy, cause that's what she is - ALL the time!) is a longhair calico with just an incredible coat.  It is plush yet silky to the touch and very rarely mats .  I find that the longhair softens the look of the Brit, making them even sweeter looking.  The longhair coat is an easy coat to maintain, not requiring a lot of grooming, much like the coat I have on my Folds.  It is NOT a fluffy coat, more like a Ragdoll, then a Persian.

Brits are a bit more active them Scottish Folds, but still relatively laid back.  I have found them to be sweet and quiet natured, playful but still very outgoing and loving.  Some do not like to be held, liking to have their feet on the ground but still like to lay on the couch with you or cuddle with you in bed.  The British I have are good travelers, adjust well to new situations and play well with others, both human and animal companions.  They are a bit more talkie then the Folds, but not overly so.  If you like Scottish Folds, you will like the British Shorthairs as well!
