An important part of any Scottish Fold breeding program are the cats you breed with your folded ears. These cats are every bit as necessary as those lovely folded cats you see in the show ring. As a breeder, you have 3 choices for breeding - Straight earred Folds, American Shorthairs or British Shorthairs. While I use predominantly Straight earred Folds, I also use British Shorthairs, especially now that I'm trying to bring some of the GORGEOUS colors to the US that you don't usually see here. I wanted something I could show as well & in my opinion they are closer to the "Fold" type then the American Shorthairs.
I don't usually breed British, I have them mainly as an outross for my folds, but I do have the occasional British litter, especially now that I have some wonderful "new" colors. For the look I wanted to see in MY Folds, I chose the British as they have a rounder look, a more padded body & a coat that I feel is closer to the Fold's wonderful plushiness. I also find them to be closer to the Fold's laid back personality.

British Shorthairs are sometimes called British Blues, but actually come in a wide variety of colors and patterns - including solids, tabbies, torties, calicos, bicolors (with white) & even shadeds & Pointeds. They come in such "exotic" colors as Chocolates, Goldens, Cinnamons, & Fawns in both solid, tabby patterened or with white. Sadly, CFA has chosen to ignore these colorations patterns, even though they are accepted thruout the world & are VERY popular.

British Shorthairs also come in a longhair variety, which although not recognized by CFA have been around forever & are recognized by most other organizations, including TICA. British were the original "street cat" of Britian, so obviously the gene naturally occurs. After WWI there were so few Brits left that the remaining ones were bred to a blue Persian (hence the predominance for blues) so all of the early "new" stock carried for it. I personally find the longhairs to be stunning cats, in fact my first British Queen, Rumietum's Miss Muffet of Owhl (aka Happy) was a longhair. The coat is lovely, plush yet silky to the touch & very rarely matts. I find that the longhair softens the look of the British, making them even sweeter looking. The coat is easy to maintain, not requiring a lot of grooming, much like the coats of my longhaired Folds. It is NOT a fluffy coat, more like a Ragdoll's then a Persian's.

Brits are a bit more active then the scottish Folds, but still relatively laid back. I have found them to be sweet & quiet natured, playful & outgoing. Brits are loving, although many do not like to be held, preferring to have their feet on the ground. Still they will happily join you on the couch or cuddle with you in bed. They tend to adjust well to new situation & play well with others, both human & animal. They are a bit more talkative then Scottish Folds but not overly so. If you like the Folds, you'll like the British Shorthair as well!
